BDNF – Miracle-Gro for the Brain
by LINDA GABRIEL
in MIND BODY CONNECTION, NEUROSCIENCE
BDNF Miracle-Gro for the Brain
What is BDNF?
BDNF stands for “brain-derived neurotrophic factor.” It’s a protein actually, dubbed a master molecule and referred to as “Miracle-Gro for the brain” by Harvard psychiatrist, John J. Ratey, MD, author of Spark, The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. According to Ratey, BDNF is “a crucial biological link between thought, emotions, and movement.”
BDNF binds to receptors in the synapses between neurons, increasing voltage (yes your brain is electric!), and improving signal strength. Inside the cells, it activates genes that increase production of more BDNF and other important proteins, as well as serotonin, the neurotransmitter vital for learning and self-esteem. Low levels of BDNF have been associated with depression and even suicide.
Basically BDNF improves the function of neurons, encourages new neurons to grow and protects them from stress and cell death. Sprinkled on neurons in a petri dish, BDNF is observed to cause brain cells to sprout the structural branches required for learning — sort of like fertilizer for the brain.
So how do you get more BDNF?
Exercise!
Daily aerobic exercise is best, but including intervals of sprints are even better. In a recent German study, volunteers who did two 3 minute sprints (separated by 2 minutes of lower intensity) during the course of a forty-minute treadmill session demonstrated higher increases in BDNF than non-sprinters. Not only that, the sprinters learned vocabulary words 20 percent faster than non-sprinting exercisers. It seems even a small amount of high-intensity exertion can have a profound effect on your brain!
Caution: Be sure to have a talk with your doctor before engaging in high-intensity sprints or before beginning any exercise program. It’s important to have aerobic conditioning in place before adding intervals of sprints — at least 6 months of six-days-a-week aerobics according to Dr. Ratey. And even then, check first with your own doctor.

Spring Break- March 10th- March 17th

Student Led Conferences:
Please make plans to meet with your child and their teacher during our student-led conference schedule.
Thursday, March 9th- 3:00-6:00
Friday, March 10th-8:00-11:00
Spring Break- March 10th- March 17th
Our goal is that 100% of our students will participate in a student-led conference. We are so excited about the opportunity our students have to show you their hard work and future goals.
This is the opportunity for your child to show you what they are doing at school and a time for them to shine. We ask that this be a positive experience. This may spark questions that you might have that go a little deeper than can be addressed in a Student-led conference. Please feel free to set up a time outside of this conference window to address further concerns or questions. We would love for discuss those items at a separate time.
Helpful tips for making a Student led conference a success.
*Please pick up your child at dismissal in the car line and once the school in clear we will open the doors for conferences to begin. Students can not stay in the classroom until the conference begins.
*Ensure siblings have someone to watch them so you can give your undivided attention to the child preforming the conference.
* Work with your child to set up future goals and help them write it in their Leadership Notebook.
Additional information and examples:
Student-led conferences are quite common is schools across the country. Here is what to expect.
The student presents their portfolio of work and leads the discussion.
The teacher facilitates the discussion.
The parent listens and learns about their child’s academic and interpersonal progress and needs.
This approach gives you a first-hand look at how well your child understands the material, and it enables students to become agents of their own learning. With the proper instruction and support, students are well-equipped to understand themselves as learners, identify their strengths and areas for improvement, express their preferences and needs, and set their own goals for success. Benefits of Student-led conference:. Through the process of preparing for and leading a conference, students learn to:
*Reflect on themselves as learners
*Articulate their needs
*Make plans to improve
*Get help from others
*Own the goals they set for themselves
Here are a couple of videos that demonstrate what you might experience during the student led conference.

Tamara Terry is a Paraprofessional here at Chouteau Elementary School and this is what she had to say about working here.
"My favorite part of working at Chouteau Elementary is when I work with a student on a concept that they are struggling with and when I see they finally understand it! It is awesome to see their face light up at their accomplishment. I also enjoy the staff very much. Everyone is so helpful when it comes to giving ideas on how to make working with children a success.
The best part of the day is when I am assisting with small groups in the resource room. During this time I get to know the children more and I also get to see what teaching strategies work with the different age groups and personalities.
My #1 goal for myself this year is to take the OSAT. This is to receive my Teacher Certification. Tests are not my friends, so this has been a struggle for me to take the leap and sign up to take this test.
I feel one of my strengths is that I am a very patient person. I try to take the time to listen to the children and get to know them."
Mrs. Terry, We are so glad you are a part of the team here at CES!
